Kristian Gerathy is an Aussie bowhunter who’s all about the grind, the mishaps, and the magic moments that come with chasing deer solo. We chatted with Kristian while he was literally sitting on a ridge mid-rut, scoping out the fallow. Here's what he had to say.
Well, I’m actually sitting on a ridge right now at a fallow block I have access to. It’s early rut, and this is my second year with access to a nice block, so I’m really excited to see what goes down. At sunrise today, there were a few croaks and two bucks fighting. Just keen to see if I can get a bigger buck down than last year.
Actually in NZ, at a little pub on the road between Hanmer Springs and Okuku where I stay. Not sure of the town, but it was a simple bangers and mash with a beer. After six days camping wet, it was bloody delightful.
Three steps, glass. Look for legs, ears, and tails, not a full deer. If you’re starting to walk more than three steps, sit down and take a break.
Last year’s YouTube Solo Rut. Practically nine days of the worst luck anyone could have, to the point where it became comical. Hail, storms, a broken-down car, getting lost, camping out in an emergency blanket. It’s funny now, anyway.
At the moment, it’s here (Australia). I’ve just got access to a few places I’m excited to learn and try to figure out the deer. I do still need to get back to NZ and find myself a big red, though. That’s on the list.
Vantage Hood. I’m a bowhunter and need the face veil to get in close. Although, this new Acclimate Top is pretty damn close. It’s keeping me warm, but venting heat under my pack. Usually, I have to stop and take off jumpers, but this one is so comfy, quiet, and packs down small in my pack. It might actually win!
