Te Maire Martin might be best known for his footwork on the field, but off the clock, you’ll find him out bush, often with his kids in tow. We had a yarn with Te Maire to hear about wild rides, post-hunt feeds, and what’s on his bucket list once the final whistle blows.

What’s one thing you’re most excited about this hunting season?

Getting some wins on the field, which means more time off to hunt.

Best meal you’ve had after a hunt?

Wild pork boil-up. Best feed after a hunt.

Best hunt-related advice you’ve ever received?

"Don’t have to shoot them all, let ’em go, let ’em grow."

Funniest or best moment from past Roar hunts?

Last year, I put a deer on my horse for the first time. He lost it, threw it off, and ran away. Not funny at the time, but a good laugh now.

If you could hunt anywhere in the world, where would it be and why?

Down South Island, to be honest. I’ve only been there once and loved it. I’d specifically like to go to Fiordland. Never been able to go away for the Roar because footy season is so busy, but once footy’s finished, I’ll be sure to get down there.

What’s your go-to piece of Hunters Element gear for the Roar and why?

Eclipse Pants – Favourite piece of HE gear. Best and comfiest pants I’ve worn.

Prowl Boots – Very comfortable, and light.

Acclimate Top – Warm and comfy.

75L Arete Pack – Comfortable and fits heaps, especially for overnight hunts. Use it for diving too—super strong.

Apex Bino Defender – Plenty of pockets, very handy.

Odyssey Jacket (if wet) – Light and comfy.

Tusk Bush Coat V2 – Always in my bag in case I need to carry anything, perfect for winter pig hunting.
