A couple of good mates and I always meet up for an annual hunting trip. Previously, it has always been a duck shooting opening trip but this year we decided to mix it up and go Tahr hunting instead. My mate Sam and I headed South from Wellington in the trusty 80 Series. After we made it through the 32 stop/go’s in the Lewis Pass, we stopped in Christchurch to pick up Richard, then headed up through Mesopotamia Station and parked up at Growler Hutt for the night.
The next morning we headed up to Mistake Flats and then over to the Curtis Memorial Hut. We arrived to find an awesome newly renovated hut. After a good night we were up at first light and straight across the river. Full of energy, we cut straight up the hill only to get bluffed out 3 hours later after climbing 400 vertical meters. We made the most of it by flying a drone up to see what we were missing out on (which fortunately wasn’t much) and got a few awesome shots with the camera.
We headed back down via a scree slope and back to the hut for some brews and a few laughs.
After a slow start the next day we headed up into a different creek which opened up into a nice basin. We could see a good bull from the bottom so Sam and I started climbing. Richard stayed down in the truck as he had hurt his knee the day earlier coming down the scree slope.
We continued climbing to where we thought we could see the bull. It seemed like an endless climb. The higher we got the more we came to realise the huge scale of the country and how much further we had to go to get to the top. Part way up we lost sight of the bull. We finally got up to a position where we thought we would have a good vantage point to see where he went, only to hear a shot followed closely by another two from down in the valley.
Soon after the radio crackled into life and it was Richard. He proceeded to tell us that he had just shot two young bulls off the bonnet of the truck that walked out from the creek we had climbed up.
We glassed for another twenty minutes to see if the bull would show up but it didn’t and it was no longer in view from the truck either. After taking a few photos we decided to pack it in and head back down to help Richard with his two bulls.
After breaking down the bulls we retired to the hut for the last of our brews and some great bush tucker.
The next morning we made the slow trek back down the river then up to Christchurch for the night before coming back to the capital via the Lewis Pass.
Even though Richard got the glory with no hard work, it was a fantastic trip into some primo country with great mates. The planning for next year has already begun.
