Andrew Sturt – Havalon’s Piranta Edge Knife

December 11, 2013

Last month I spent a week down South in search of Tahr. Before I left someone tossed me one of the Havalon blades and asked me to give it a work out.

For those of you who haven’t seen these knives yet, they are folding style knife with changeable blades. As opposed to the traditional hunting knife with one set steel blade the Havalons use razor sharp scalpel blades that can be thrown away and replaced when the edge dulls.

The model I took down was the ‘Piranta Edge’ which had a bright orange synthetic handle with grip inserts along the sides. This will likely be the big winner for the hunting market as its bright colour saves you from losing it among the dead leaves on the forest floor, and a solid grip saves your fingers from slipping when it gets covered in blood.

My first impression was that its blades were razor sharp but flimsy. The blades are seriously sharp but I was pretty skeptical about how it would hold its edge against Bone, Dirt and all the other Crap that my hunting knife normally ends up dealing with. The size and shape of the blade looked good for general work involved with cutting up animals and the handle was slim and small.

I pulled the Piranta out on the first Bull of the trip and gave it a go. Severing the head first I found it to be almost funny how easily it slid through the Hair, Skin and Flesh. These blades are SCARY SHARP! It handled this with absolutely no trouble and I moved on to the Backstraps next. This is where I thought I might have a few issues with the blade wearing down along the spine. It didn’t seem to have the slightest trouble getting through both straps and back legs from here without losing any noticeable edge.

I repeated this process on the next Bull with the same results and pulled it out again for the third Big Boy, this time I was going to skin the animal. I worked my way through him with no problems what so ever and the blade was still far sharper than any traditional hunting knife I have used to date by the end of the third animal.

I had taken down about 15 spare blades with me, with the intention of changing them as soon as I blunted or broke one, but I never made it on to my second blade.

So this now has me thinking very differently about hunting knives. A knife that is far sharper than the average person can hone their regular blade to, and an easy on the spot replacement for when it does dull or break. This just seems like an obvious choice that I’ve been overlooking all these years. It does have its downsides as well. The blade is thin in comparison to a full steel blade so it would be too week for chopping through branches and splitting rib cages I would suspect. Also you could argue that it is too sharp in the sense that you need to be careful you don’t grab the sharp end as it will shred your fingers with ease. But overall it is a fantastic new way of looking at how a hunting knife should be and for what it’s worth, I’m convinced.
